The Common Thread

(Weltkultren Museum, Frankfurt 2016)

The Common Thread explores multiple interconnections between textiles and forms of knowledge across the world. Max Carocci contributed with a section dedicated to two Native American textile artists (Shan Goshorn, Eastern Band Cherokee; Sarah Sense, Choctaw/Chitimacha), and their individual responses to Weltkulturen’s old Southeast USA basketry collections. The exhibition was structured on the idea that baskets, woven mats, and textiles from these regions materialised ideas and cultural references important technologies that store cultural memory. Parallels drawn between old and new textiles revealed interesting analogies that showed the relevance of contemporary art for Native North American peoples today.
