First Peoples-Second City:
Paintings by Chris and Debra Pappan (Rainmaker Gallery, Bristol, 2014)
Co-curated with Rainmaker’s gallery Director Jo-Anne Prince, the exhibition brought for the first time to the attention of the British public the works by the Native American artistic couple Chris and Debra Pappan (respectively Osage/Kaw/Sioux, and Jemez Pueblo/Korean). The exhibition was a reflection on the experience of being Native American in the city. Notions of identity and (in)visibility, resurfaced in their colourful paintings that framed in often satirical way serious questions about popular representations and urban Natives’ relationship to past and tradition. See here for Max’ texts from the exhibition.
