Borders and Boundaries

(ArtVentures Gallery, Fayetteville, USA 2018- touring)

Max Carocci took part in this touring exhibition curated by Cherokee artist Bobby Martin, not as curator, but as artist himself. Three of Max’s watercolours were requested by the curator as part of a project focussed on dispossession, colonisation and genocide. The three pieces, collectively called the ‘Extinction Series’ represent three distinct characters from Native nations that no longer exist linguistically or culturally. The purpose of these watercolours was to stress the importance of cultural revitalisation, and customary traditions in light of past losses. Max’s reflections here is a harrowing reminder of the horrors of conquest and the epistemological violence imposed on all indigenous Americans throughout the hemisphere.
